Harlem Globetrotters On Tour
About This Machine
Harlem Globetrotters On Tour is a pinball machine from September 1979, designed by Greg Kmiec with art by Greg Freres, and manufactured by Bally. This four-player Solid State Electronic (SS) game carries a licensed theme built around the iconic Harlem Globetrotters basketball franchise, bringing the team's colorful spirit to the pinball floor. With 14,550 units confirmed produced, it was a substantial production run for Bally at the height of the solid-state boom.
Gameplay-wise, Harlem Globetrotters On Tour offers an impressive array of interactive elements, including three flippers, three pop bumpers, two slingshots, and six standup targets, one of which is recessed. The machine also features three spinning targets, two kick-out holes, a 4-in-line bank of drop targets, and a right outlane detour gate that adds an extra layer of complexity to the gameplay experience.
An interesting production quirk: the multiplier inserts (2X-3X-5X-Special) shown in the manufacturer's flyer are green, white, white, and green, while most production games use green, yellow, white, and red, and factory examples exist with other combinations. Greg Freres's name appears on the backglass; the name 'Hudson' below the right flipper likely credits Margaret Hudson, who may have cut screens during production. Built on the Bally AS-2518-35 MPU, it remains a solid example of Greg Kmiec's late-1970s design work.
