Hacienda
About This Machine
Hacienda is a single-player, flipperless electro-mechanical game released by J. H. Keeney and Company of Chicago in February 1962, designed by Ed Krynski, who would go on to a prolific career at Gottlieb. Keeney advertised it as the same game as its own 1962 'El Rancho' but without that game's 'Panascope Vision Unit' in the backbox; both games actually display the name 'El Rancho' in the center playfield.
With no flippers, play centers on the launch and the bounce: the game offers 2-ball play with an earned option for a third ball, three pop bumpers, and six scoring bumpers, combining bulb scoring with score reels up to a maximum displayed score of 999 points. Unusually, the game has no sound at all — no bells and no knocker.
The drop-down cabinet shows thoughtful serviceability for its day: the backglass slides out to either side of the backbox, the playfield glass slides out the front or back of the cabinet, and the coin box includes an adjustable divider to split earnings between the operator and the location. At 55 1/2 inches long and 270 pounds uncrated, Hacienda is a substantial and distinctive piece of early-1960s Keeney engineering, and its 'Women - World Places' theme adds period charm.
