About This Machine

Guns N' Roses is a widebody solid-state pinball machine released by Data East Pinball in June 1994, with a confirmed production run of 3,000 units. A fully licensed tribute to the iconic rock band, it was designed by Joe Kaminkow, John Borg, and Lyman F. Sheats Jr. together with the band's own guitarist, Saul "Slash" Hudson, with artwork by Markus Rothkranz and music contributions from Axl Rose, Slash, and Gilby Clarke alongside sound designer Brian Schmidt.

The four-player game delivers an energetic layout: three flippers, three pop bumpers, three slingshots, three game-controlled magnets, two 3-bank drop target sets, two ramps, a captive ball, a kickback in the left outlane, and multiball. It offers both an automatic plunger and two themed manual plungers — one shaped like a gun, the other like a rose. The guns ramp includes a diverter that can route the ball into the Snake ramp, to be served by the rose-shaped plunger, or feed it to the left flipper.

The game carries some notable trivia: according to Brian Schmidt, the Guns N' Roses song "Ain't Going Down" can be heard only on this pinball machine. Lyman Sheats' video mode was later recycled, with different art, in Sega's 1997 'The Star Wars Trilogy Special Edition' and Stern's 1999 'Harley-Davidson'. Designer John Borg has also noted that some production games shipped with headphone jacks on the cabinet front — a rarity for the era.
