Aurora
About This Machine
Aurora is a single-player electro-mechanical game attributed to the Burrows Automatic Supply Company, Ltd. of London, England, and dated to 1935. Burrows was one of the early British entrants into the coin-operated amusement trade, and games like Aurora offer a glimpse of pinball's development on the European side of the Atlantic during the 1930s.
Very little is documented about Aurora's playfield, rules, or artwork. As a mid-1930s game it long predates the flipper, so play would have depended on the plunger shot, the arrangement of pins and scoring holes, and nudging. Even its dating carries some uncertainty, as the manufacturer's recorded operating period (1932-1933) sits oddly against the game's listed 1935 date.
For historians of British and European pinball, Aurora is chiefly of interest as a surviving trace of a short-lived early manufacturer, a reminder that the 1930s pinball craze was not confined to Chicago.
