Groovy
About This Machine
Groovy, released by D. Gottlieb & Company in July 1970, is a 4-player electro-mechanical game designed by Ed Krynski with artwork by Art Stenholm. As its name suggests, it belongs squarely to the turn-of-the-decade moment when psychedelic style filtered into pinball art, and it saw a confirmed production run of 1,355 units.
Groovy is the 4-player version of Gottlieb's 'Crescendo', following the company's standard practice of offering the same design in multiple player configurations. The design also traveled abroad: a single-player Italian version was produced under the fittingly period name 'Psychedelic'.
With Krynski's dependable layout work and Stenholm's artwork, Groovy is an enjoyable representative of Gottlieb's early-1970s output — a moment when the company's electro-mechanical formula was at full maturity and its art packages were at their most colorful.
