About This Machine

The Grand Prix, designed by Steve Kordek and manufactured by Williams Electronics in 1976, is a four-player game from the twilight of the electro-mechanical era, just before solid-state electronics transformed the industry. It was a major commercial success: production records confirm 10,554 units built, making it one of Williams' most-produced EM games. A handful of examples were even fitted with solid-state controllers, sold as Williams' 1977 'Grand Prix' — a snapshot of the industry mid-transition.

The Grand Prix boasts an engaging feature set: two flippers, four drop targets, two pop bumpers, two slingshots, three kick-out holes, and two spinning targets. Notably, the upper left lane contains a unique tilt rollover, adding an extra wrinkle of risk as players work the top of the playfield. The maximum displayed score is 999,990 points per player, providing ample room for high-scoring games.

Christian Marche's artwork pays homage to the world of auto racing, with sleek graphics and a color scheme that echoes the vibrant hues of 1970s motorsport. As one of the last great EM hits from a veteran designer whose career stretched back to the 1930s, the Grand Prix is an important artifact for enthusiasts and collectors alike.
