About This Machine

Goofus, manufactured by the International Mutoscope Reel Company of New York in October 1932, is one of the earliest pinball machines, dating from the very first years of the pin-game boom. Mutoscope, best remembered for its coin-operated moving picture viewers and arcade equipment, was among the many companies that jumped into the tabletop pin-game business in the early 1930s.

Goofus is a Pure Mechanical (PM) game, meaning it contains no electrical components whatsoever. Play in this era consisted of launching balls onto a pin-studded playfield with a plunger and letting gravity carry them into scoring holes - there were no flippers, no bumpers, and no powered features, all of which came years later.

Beyond its maker, date, and single-player format, little documentation about Goofus survives, and the machine retains an enigmatic status within the pinball community. For enthusiasts of pinball's earliest days, it remains an inviting subject for further research and discovery.
