About This Machine

Atlantis, released under the Bally name in March 1989 by Midway Manufacturing (then a subsidiary of WMS Industries), is a four-player solid-state game designed by Peter Perry with artwork by Pat McMahon. Its Myth and Legend meets water-sports theme sends players into an undersea world, and 1,501 units were built in a production run that stretched from March to May of 1989.

The playfield is packed with variety: two flippers, three pop bumpers, a mechanically raised and lowered ramp, a loop shot, a 4-bank of drop targets, three 3-bank standup target sets, a spinning target, a vertical up-kicker, and a center up-post. The signature toy is a submarine on the upper-left playfield that captures three 'divers' (locked balls) and then kicks them all onto the playfield to launch a three-ball multiball.

Behind the scenes the game is a bit of a hybrid: although branded a Bally, it uses Williams' System 11 audio board for its music and sound, composed by Robin Seaver with sound work by Dan Forden. Atlantis also carries a small historical footnote as the last game distributed to Germany via Bally Wulff.
