About This Machine

Atlantis, released by Gottlieb in January 1975, is a single-player electro-mechanical game with a Fantasy-Mythology theme, designed by Jeff Brenner with artwork by Gordon Morison. Some 2,225 units were produced. The playfield layout is essentially that of Ed Krynski's Sheriff/Lawman design: Brenner was asked by Wayne Neyens and Judd Weinberg to create a single-player version of Sheriff, and he removed the free ball gate and used the newer, bouncier mini-posts.

The game offers two flippers, two pop bumpers, two slingshots, a ten-bank of drop targets, and two parallel lanes of serial rollovers on the right playfield, playable as 3- or 5-ball. Brenner designed the ruleset in its entirety, and its standout idea was a scoring premium for knocking down two adjacent drop targets simultaneously, a rewarding feature he wished had been reused in later games. He originally wanted bullseye circles spanning each pair of targets to highlight the feature, but Judd Weinberg chose a blue and white fish design as a better fit for the theme.

Atlantis also has some interesting production quirks: early games in the run carry a half-moon credit window (with a replay wheel maximum of 9) instead of the square window (maximum 15), something Brenner himself was unaware of until historians contacted him. The top three advance lights were also flipped from his intended right-to-left direction when the schematic was redrawn for production. Maximum displayed score is 99,990 points, and a tilt ends the game.
