About This Machine

Gold Rush, designed by Norm Clark with artwork by Christian Marche, was released by Williams in April 1971. A 4-player electromechanical game with a Canadian West prospecting theme, it was one of three versions of the same design: the 1-player version was sold as 'Klondike', and a 4-player export version was produced as 'Jackpot'. A confirmed 1,156 units of Gold Rush were built for the US and Canadian markets, with the export Jackpot accounting for over 5,000 more.

The game's artwork and design capture the spirit of prospecting for gold in the Canadian wilderness. Players work with two flippers, five pop bumpers, two slingshots, five standup targets, and three kick-out holes, plus an up-post between the flippers for last-second saves. The signature feature is a set of three slot-machine-style reels near the top of the playfield that award up to 3 replays for winning combinations. One quirk of the layout: a gap between each flipper and the adjacent slingshot prevents players from cradling the ball on an energized flipper.

Scoring is tracked on a replay wheel with a maximum of 37, and the game's soundtrack is pure early-70s electromechanical: two bells and a knocker. Designer Norm Clark was a significant figure at Williams in this period, and Gold Rush remains a solid example of early-1970s electromechanical design, offering a glimpse into the gameplay and themes of the era.
