Zero Zone
Comad • 1993

Zero Zone is a two-player puzzle game released in 1993 by Comad. Gameplay revolves around manipulating falling blocks composed of various shapes and colors to create complete horizontal lines, much like the popular Columns series. However, Zero Zone distinguishes itself with its mature themes, incorporating suggestive imagery and audio samples into the experience. Two players can compete simultaneously, adding a layer of strategic interaction as they vie for dominance on the shared playfield. The game utilizes a Motorola 68000 processor to manage gameplay visuals alongside a Zilog Z80 processor and an OKI6295 sound chip for audio. Players control their blocks using a four-way joystick, aiming to strategically position them to clear lines and hinder their opponent's progress. Sound cues, including sampled phrases like “Welcome” and "You suck!", contribute to the game’s distinctive atmosphere; these samples were originally taken from Data East’s Sly Spy. Music in Zero Zone is shared with Comad’s later title, Las Vegas Girl – Girl ‘94, creating a sonic link between the two games. The combination of familiar puzzle mechanics and provocative content makes for a unique arcade experience intended for mature audiences.
