Zero Hour (set 1)
Universal • 1980

Pilot a spaceship through a vertical playfield in Universal’s Zero Hour, released in late 1980 as part of the Cosmic series. Two players work cooperatively to navigate a barrage of falling meteorites and enemy spacecraft. Players use an eight-way joystick to maneuver, firing at incoming threats while aiming for high scores by destroying red meteorites, which yield quadruple points. After clearing all enemy ships from the screen, a landing pad appears, demanding skillful piloting for bonus points. Successful landings are key to maximizing your score as you fend off increasingly intense waves of projectiles and celestial bodies. The game's simple controls belie its engaging gameplay loop, relying on quick reflexes and strategic positioning to survive. Zero Hour features a resolution of 192 x 240 pixels with a palette of 64 colors, powered by a Zilog Z80 processor. It represents an early example of the gallery shooter genre, inviting players to test their skills against a constant stream of hazards in this two-player arcade classic.
