Zaviga
Data East Corporation • 1984

In Zaviga, released in 1984 by Data East Corporation, players control futuristic jet fighters in a cooperative vertical shooter experience for two people. The game presents an endless scrolling environment where you face waves of robotic enemies and mechanical war machines attacking a besieged planet. Your aircraft possess dual laser cannons and the ability to transform into a tank form, allowing for both aerial assaults and ground-based navigation through enemy territory. Gameplay involves navigating continuously downward through varied landscapes, battling formations of foes, and occasionally confronting large cannon mountains that must be defeated by targeting a specific weak point. As you progress, new enemy types and obstacles like flying rocks and aquatic adversaries are introduced to challenge your skills. Zaviga marked Data East’s initial use of the Motorola 6809 CPU in game development.
