Youjyuden (Japan)

Legend of Bewitching Beast is a two-player cooperative shooter released in Japan by Irem in 1986. Players control characters navigating through environments while battling enemies using an eight-way joystick and two buttons for action. The gameplay blends elements of the shooting genre with a walking mechanic, requiring precise movement to avoid obstacles and projectiles as much as it does aiming and firing. The game runs on Irem’s M-62 hardware, utilizing a Zilog Z80 main processor alongside Motorola processors and General Instrument AY8910 and MSM5205 sound chips for its soundtrack. Two players can engage in the action simultaneously, working together to progress through each level. The title directly translates from Japanese, hinting at the fantastical setting and creatures within the game. A soundtrack release featuring music from Youjyuden alongside other Irem titles appeared on Alfa Records in 1988.
