Gameplay

Players pilot spacecraft in Yamato, a two-player shooter released by Sega in 1983. The game challenges players to navigate through space, utilizing an eight-way joystick and two buttons per player for movement and firing. It’s a gallery-style shooter where the focus is on precision aiming and strategic dodging of enemy projectiles as you progress through various stages. The name Yamato references a Japanese battleship lost during World War II. Programmed by L'Y, this game features dual Zilog Z80 processors handling both gameplay and sound, with General Instrument AY8910 chips providing the audio experience. The cooperative action allows for a shared gaming experience between two players; one can assist the other, or they can compete to achieve higher scores. Originally released in Japan during March of 1983, Yamato later saw a port to the Sega SG-1000 console. Security measures were implemented by Masatoshi Mizunaga for this arcade release.
