Xyonix
Philko • 1989

Xyonix presents a two-player puzzle challenge reminiscent of classic block-dropping games like Tetris. Players manipulate falling shapes using an eight-way joystick to strategically position them and clear lines from the playfield. The goal is to outscore your opponent by efficiently removing blocks, preventing the stacks from reaching the top of the screen. The game’s visuals incorporate unique cultural elements; stylized figures known as Jangseungs appear throughout gameplay, bearing Korean inscriptions. Completing a stage rewards players with a rendition of the traditional folk song "Ariang." Published in 1989 by Philko and running on a Zilog Z80 processor, Xyonix offers a fast-paced experience driven by quick reflexes and spatial reasoning skills.
