Xor World (different hardware, ver 1.1, checksum 3333BA, prototype)
Gaelco • 1990

Gaelco’s Xor World appeared in prototype form in 1990 and presents players with a unique puzzle experience for two concurrent participants. Gameplay shares similarities with Tetris, tasking players with manipulating falling blocks to create solid lines across the playfield. However, instead of simply clearing rows, success relies on strategically positioning these shapes based on an underlying XOR logic system – a mechanic that adds considerable depth and challenge. Two players compete simultaneously on separate screens, each navigating their own set of falling pieces. The game utilizes a Motorola 68000 processor and an SAA1099 sound chip to deliver its puzzling action. Controls are simple, employing an eight-way joystick for piece movement and two buttons for rotation and dropping. Though it never progressed beyond the testing phase, Xor World offers a glimpse into alternative puzzle game design from the early 1990s, showcasing a distinct twist on established mechanics.
