Xevious (Namco)
Namco • 1982

Piloting the Solvalou spacecraft, players face waves of enemy forces in Xevious, a vertically scrolling shooter released by Namco in 1982. The game challenges you to destroy both airborne and ground-based threats across sixteen distinct areas, each separated by forested landscapes. You’ll utilize two weapon systems: an air zapper for targeting flying enemies and blaster bombs for those on the ground, with a targeting indicator assisting in accurate bomb deployment. Enemies range from standard fighters to exploding projectiles and rotating shields, while ground-based opposition includes stationary bases, mobile vehicles, and imposing fortresses like the Andor Genesis. The game adapts to player skill; consistently defeating enemies can lead to tougher adversaries appearing, but destroying strategically placed "Zolback" radars will revert back to weaker foes. Gameplay continues looping from Area 7 after Area 16 is cleared. Xevious incorporates pre-rendered graphics for a level of detail uncommon in arcade games of the era, and features a unique system where progress within an area influences when you can resume play after losing a life. The game’s technical innovations included its use of multiple Zilog Z80 processors and discrete circuitry to create distinctive explosion sounds.
