Wyvern F-0 (Rev 1)
Taito Corporation • 1985

Pilots take to the skies in Wyvern F-0, a cooperative vertical shooter from Taito released in 1985. Players control aircraft and navigate through scrolling environments while battling enemy formations. The game shares similarities with titles like Xevious, tasking players with eliminating ground and aerial targets as they progress. A distinctive feature of the gameplay is the plane's ability to perform aerial loops, reminiscent of the classic arcade game 1942. Wyvern F-0 utilizes a unique dual CRT display system combined with a half-mirror to create a layered visual effect. One screen renders ground elements while the other handles airborne objects; these are then merged through the mirror, producing an illusion of depth without needing specialized glasses. This technique introduces some color blending—for example, a red object passing over a blue background might appear purple—as part of the overall presentation. Two players can team up to tackle the challenges presented in Wyvern F-0, maneuvering their aircraft using eight-way joysticks and button controls. The game’s title logo sometimes led to confusion, with incorrect labeling as “Wyvern FQ.”
