WWF: Wrestlemania (rev 1.30 08/10/95)
Midway • 1995

Step into the squared circle with WWF Wrestlemania, a two-player arcade fighting game released in 1995 by Midway. Choose from eight popular WWF wrestlers—Bret Hart, Shawn Michaels, Undertaker, Razor Ramon, Bam Bam Bigelow, Yokozuna, Lex Luger, and Doink—and battle it out using a simple five-button control scheme: punch, power punch, block, kick, and power kick. Players can tackle either the 'Intercontinental Championship' mode, requiring victories in single and handicap matches, or the more challenging 'WWF Championship’ mode culminating in an exhausting gauntlet match against every wrestler on the roster. The game features a straightforward one-on-one wrestling format, emphasizing quick button presses and strategic blocking to overcome opponents. Beyond the standard gameplay, hidden codes allow for playful alterations like displaying move names, disabling blocking entirely, or triggering rapid-fire combo sequences. A unique Easter egg within the game’s code – remnants of a planned Robotron-inspired mini-game—remains disabled due to memory limitations. Look closely at the background crowd and you might even spot some of the developers who brought this wrestling experience to life, including lead designer Mark Turmell and artist Sal Divita.
