Wizard of Wor
Dave Nutting Associates / Midway • 1980

Wizard of Wor is a cooperative maze shooter for two players, transporting you to a series of interconnected dungeons ruled by a mischievous wizard. Players control either a yellow or blue "Worrior," navigating grid-based levels filled with dangerous creatures like Burwors, Garwors, and Thorwors, each possessing unique abilities such as invisibility. The game features a wrap-around design; moving off one side of the screen transports you to the opposite edge, creating a disorienting but strategic environment. A key mechanic involves backup Worriors: when a player's character is defeated, they have a brief window to retrieve a replacement from a corner box before being forced back into play. Successfully eliminating enemies unlocks new challenges; destroying all Burwors summons a Garwor, and defeating a Garwor brings forth a Thorwor, culminating in the appearance of a Worluk which, if allowed to escape, ends the level. Cooperative gameplay is encouraged as players can assist each other by standing back-to-back while battling waves of monsters. Throughout your journey, the Wizard of Wor taunts you with humorous phrases delivered via early speech synthesis, adding personality and a touch of quirky charm to this challenging two-player arcade experience.
