Gameplay

Data East’s Wonder Planet, released in Japan in 1987, is a two-player vertical scrolling shooter. Players control spacecraft tasked with ascending through layered planetary environments to confront an unknown threat. Movement relies on an eight-way joystick and button controls manage firing and special actions as players navigate increasingly challenging formations of enemies and obstacles. The game’s soundtrack was later released on a limited edition album by Alfa Records. The visuals depict vibrant, otherworldly landscapes comprised of floating islands and bizarre alien flora, contrasting with the intense action unfolding onscreen. Programmed primarily by M. Sano and K. Takahashi, Wonder Planet features graphics designed by Jun Matsuda and R. Takahashi. The game’s music is a product of the collaborative efforts of Azusa Hara (AZUSA), Tatsuya Kiuchi, H. Kowastu, and H. Yoshida, utilizing sound chips including a YM2203 and YM3526. Wonder Planet's core gameplay involves constant upward progression, requiring precise maneuvering to avoid projectiles and enemy attacks while eliminating threats to clear the path forward. Game design was overseen by K. Kubota.
