Gameplay

Data East’s Windjammers, known in Japan as Flying Power Disc, is a two-player sports game released in 1994 for the Neo Geo arcade system. Players control characters who toss a disc across a court, attempting to land it within designated zones to score points against their opponent. Utilizing an eight-way joystick and two buttons—one for throwing/receiving and another for lobbing—players strategize to outmaneuver rivals and secure victory through skillful throws and clever positioning. Beyond the core gameplay of disc tossing, Windjammers incorporates mini-games triggered at intervals during matches. One such diversion challenges players to fling a disc as far as possible with their canine companion, while another transforms the action into a unique flying disc bowling experience. Character voices also add personality, with each participant delivering phrases in their native language. Regional differences exist; for example, a Korean player character is replaced by a British counterpart on arcade machines set to the US territory setting, though the visual representation remains consistent. The game reflects elements of an actual sport called "10-S," although without formal permission from its creators.
