Konami’s Vulcan Venture, released in arcades in 1988, is a two-player horizontal scrolling shooter that brings intense space combat to the forefront. Players pilot customizable spacecraft through increasingly challenging levels, battling waves of enemy ships and formidable bosses. As they progress, players can collect power-ups that enhance their ship’s weaponry, including a specialized “Pulse Laser” alongside standard firing capabilities, allowing for varied attack strategies. This version is an export release derived from the original Japanese title Gradius II - GOFER no Yabou, and features some key differences compared to its predecessor, such as the inclusion of continues and a modified title screen. The game’s high score system has a unique quirk: attempts to enter initials beginning with "SEX" are automatically altered to “ASO.” Vulcan Venture builds upon the established Gradius series, following Nemesis and Gradius 2, and preceding titles like Nemesis 3 and Gradius III. Later iterations of this franchise would find their way onto various platforms including PlayStation 4, preserving its legacy for new audiences.
