Gameplay

Volfied challenges players to reclaim a besieged homeworld in this unique puzzle action game from Taito, released in 1989. As a space pilot piloting "The Monotros," you navigate a rectangular playing field and draw lines to enclose areas, transforming the background graphics as territory is claimed. Smaller enemies trapped within these newly-formed regions are eliminated, awarding bonus points, while larger bosses patrol the edges of the screen posing a constant threat. Players must strategically manage their time and movements as drawing lines leaves them vulnerable to enemy attacks. Random power-ups, appearing as grey boxes within the field, offer temporary advantages like increased speed or weapon upgrades when captured inside completed rectangles. Cooperative play allows for two players to work together, each controlling their own Monotros in a race against time and alien invaders. The game builds upon Taito’s earlier success, Qix, adding an action element with persistent enemies and timed challenges. Volfied combines strategic planning with quick reflexes, offering a compelling and engaging experience for puzzle and arcade enthusiasts alike.
