Vimana (World, rev A)
Toaplan • 1991

Take to the skies in Vimana, a fast-paced vertical shooter from Toaplan released in 1991. Players control a ship launching from atop two elephants and navigate a constantly scrolling environment inspired by ancient Indian mythology and the epic poem, the Mahabharata. The game presents a relentless barrage of enemies as players progress through increasingly challenging levels until reaching the final stage. Combat revolves around three primary weapons: a standard twin-shot that can be upgraded for increased power, a charge shot capable of firing in multiple directions when rapidly tapped, and a powerful Circle Bomb that seeks out nearby foes. Throughout their journey, players can collect items to enhance their firepower, replenish lives or acquire bonus points. Two players can join forces to tackle the game’s challenges cooperatively. Vimana incorporates elements drawn from ancient Indian culture and legends of flying vehicles, offering a unique visual backdrop for its intense gameplay. A hidden boss encounter is triggered by quickly defeating the second boss, revealing an additional challenge for skilled pilots.
