Venture (version 5 set 1)
Exidy • 1981

Venture places you in the role of an archer navigating a multi-level dungeon filled with treasure and hostile creatures. The game unfolds as a top-down view of interconnected rooms; players move between them on a floor plan to clear each chamber of its guarded prize. Upon entering a room, the screen zooms in, focusing gameplay on that specific area where you can use your bow and arrow to defeat enemies and claim the treasure within. Once collected, returning to the larger map allows selection of the next room to conquer, with previously cleared rooms becoming inaccessible. Successfully retrieving treasures awards bonus points, but escape isn’t always straightforward; "hall monsters" patrol the corridors between rooms, forcing players to evade them or risk damage. Strategic movement and quick reactions are essential for survival as you progress through increasingly challenging dungeon levels, ultimately seeking to collect all treasures on each level before descending deeper. The game presents a unique blend of maze navigation and shooting action, demanding both careful planning and skillful archery. Technical aspects of Venture include MOS Technology processors powering the gameplay and sound, while the dedicated arcade cabinet featured distinctive side art depicting a character battling serpentine monsters. Some rooms require specific tactics, such as avoiding walls or strategically targeting creatures to maintain speed and efficiency in your quest for treasure.
