SNK’s Vanguard II, released in 1984, is a two-player field shooter that builds upon the foundation of its predecessor. Players pilot spacecraft through a circular playfield filled with asteroids and enemy ships, maneuvering using eight-way joysticks to dodge projectiles and return fire. The goal is to destroy waves of approaching adversaries while collecting power-ups that enhance your ship’s weaponry and capabilities. The game's unique visual style utilizes vector graphics, creating crisp lines and a distinctive aesthetic for the space battles. Two Zilog Z80 processors handle gameplay alongside a dedicated sound processor featuring General Instrument AY8910 chips to deliver accompanying audio cues. Vanguard II provides cooperative action as players work together against increasingly difficult challenges. As part of the Vanguard series, this installment offers an evolution of the original’s core mechanics and presents a fresh experience for fans of classic arcade shooters.
