Gameplay

Take to the skies in Twin Cobra, a fast-paced vertical shooter released in 1987 by Toaplan and distributed internationally by Taito Corporation. Players control one of two Cobra attack helicopters – colored red and blue respectively– battling through waves of enemy tanks, aircraft, and fortifications. The game challenges players as they ascend through increasingly difficult stages, dodging projectiles and deploying powerful weaponry to clear the screen. Twin Cobra distinguishes itself from its Japanese predecessor, Kyuukyoku Tiger, by supporting simultaneous two-player cooperative action. This allows for a shared experience where both pilots work together to overcome the relentless enemy onslaught. Should a player’s helicopter be destroyed, they are respawned at their current position on screen, adding a layer of strategic challenge and encouraging aggressive playstyles. This title marked the beginning of the Twin Cobra series, later followed by Twin Cobra II. It was licensed to Romstar for distribution in the United States and subsequently ported to various home consoles including the Nintendo NES and Sega Genesis.
