Gameplay

Step onto the pitch in Tecmo World Cup '90, a two-player soccer game released by Tecmo in 1989. Players choose from eight national teams and compete in side-scrolling matches across the field. Simple controls – an 8-way joystick and two buttons for kicking and tackling—allow players to quickly grasp the gameplay while striving for realistic action on the screen. The game’s perspective utilizes a scrolling technique, allowing players to follow the ball's movement as they advance toward the opponent’s goal. Players manage their team's movements using the joystick, performing low kicks, tackles, high kicks and jumps to maneuver around opponents and score goals. The graphics display a vibrant palette of colors within a 256 x 224 pixel resolution. Tecmo World Cup '90 arrived just before the real-world 1990 FIFA World Cup in Italy, kicking off a series that would continue with titles like Tecmo World Cup ‘94 and beyond. A similar bootleg version of the game was later released under the name "Euro League.”
