Gameplay

A frantic demolition derby unfolds in Turbo Tag (prototype), a one-player arcade game from Bally Midway released in 1985. Viewed from above, players maneuver their car through an arena filled with other vehicles, aiming to ram them while under the effect of a turbo boost. The catch? A persistent “red tag” car patrols the area; being tagged disables your turbocharger and slows you considerably, leaving you vulnerable. The gameplay emphasizes quick reflexes and strategic navigation as players attempt to collect bonus items scattered throughout the arena – four such collections trigger a special round. Avoiding bombs is also crucial, as contact with them results in a loss of life. Non-turbocharged collisions similarly end lives, adding an extra layer of challenge to this fast-paced experience. Players progress by gathering the letters T-U-R-B-O, which concludes each round. Built on Bally Midway’s MCR 3 hardware, Turbo Tag (prototype) never saw a public release but bears the unique mark of its development team, acknowledged in the game's high score table.
