Tropical Angel — Gameplay
Gameplay

Tropical Angel, released in 1983 by Irem, offers a unique twist on racing gameplay. Players control a female water-skier navigating a course filled with submerged rocks and timed gates marked by flags. Constant acceleration is key to maintaining speed while skillfully utilizing a trick button that spins the skier backward; however, steering is impossible during this maneuver. Successful backward spins award bonus points, encouraging players to master this technique for higher scores. As gameplay progresses, challenges increase with the introduction of ramps to jump, closely spaced buoys for extra points, and a patrolling shark that results in immediate game over upon contact. The game’s distinctive visual style combines abstract elements with detailed character animation, creating a vibrant experience on its horizontal monitor. Originally distributed as a conversion kit compatible with existing arcade cabinets, Tropical Angel notably supported both standard joysticks and analog controls, providing players with varied gameplay options. Two players can compete simultaneously to see who can conquer the course most efficiently and amass the highest score.
