Konami’s Track & Field, released in 1983, is a four-player sports arcade game offering a fast-paced take on Olympic athletics. Players compete across a series of track and field events like the 100m dash, long jump, high jump, javelin throw, and more, utilizing simple button presses to control their athlete’s performance. The gameplay focuses on timing these inputs precisely—a well-timed button press results in maximum effort for each event, while mistiming it can lead to a less impressive score. Developed originally in Japan as "Hyper Olympic," this export version provided a glimpse of athletic competition rarely seen in arcades at the time. While its initial release was limited, Track & Field has since appeared in various forms across numerous platforms throughout Europe, including home consoles and handheld devices, though ports outside of North America and Japan are not detailed here. A bootleg version, "Atlant Olimpic," even emerged thirteen years later in Italy. The game’s popularity extended beyond arcades; a Track & Field unit was featured prominently in the 1985 film The Goonies. This arcade title would eventually spawn several sequels and spin-offs including Hyper Sports and '88 Games, establishing Konami’s continued commitment to athletic gaming experiences.
