Toypop
Namco • 1986

Toypop is a cooperative maze game released by Namco in 1986 for two players. As quirky, vaguely humanoid characters, you navigate brightly colored, interconnected stages collecting scattered candies while avoiding patrolling robots. The gameplay centers around precise movement and coordination; players must work together to clear paths and retrieve all the sweets before time runs out or they are captured. The game’s visuals present a whimsical aesthetic with simple character designs and vibrant backgrounds. Controlling your character involves using a four-way joystick, requiring careful maneuvering through tight corridors and across moving platforms. A unique soundtrack, composed by Junko Ozawa, accompanies the gameplay, further enhancing the lighthearted atmosphere. Toypop has seen multiple releases beyond its arcade debut, notably appearing in several volumes of Namco Museum for the Sony PlayStation beginning in 1995, and ported to various computer systems like the Sharp X1 and X68000. A limited edition soundtrack album was also released shortly after the game’s initial release.
