Tondemo Crisis (Japan)
Tecmo • 1999

Tecmo’s Tondemo Crisis arrived in arcades in 1999 and offers a unique single-player experience centered around a Japanese family's unusual journey. Players navigate a series of action-oriented mini-games as each member—a quartet of working-class individuals—ventures out to find birthday presents for their grandmother, Haruko. These disparate games are interspersed with pre-rendered cutscenes that advance the narrative and showcase the family’s quirky personalities. The gameplay focuses on completing these individual challenges, which vary in style and objective, requiring skillful use of an eight-way joystick and six buttons to control each character through their respective tasks. Designed and scripted by Kenichi Nishi with music provided by Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra, Tondemo Crisis presents a lighthearted and unconventional arcade adventure. Notably, the game’s technical foundation utilizes a PlayStation processing unit, bringing a familiar feel for those acquainted with home console gaming of the era. A port to Sony Playstation appeared in 1999.
