Toggle (prototype)
Bally/Sente • 1985

Toggle is a two-player maze shooter developed by Bally/Sente in 1985, built on unique SAC-I hardware. Players control tanks—one red, one yellow—in an arena setting where their movements are mechanically distinct; the red tank shoots vertically and the yellow horizontally. The objective of each level is to claim more squares than your opponent by driving over them with your tank, changing their color to match yours. Special items appear within the arena that can alter gameplay, such as reversing claimed square colors or accelerating tank speed. Success in Toggle relies on strategic maneuvering and area control. Players can disable their opponent's tank through close-range shots or by colliding with its sides—excluding the areas where cannons are mounted. The game’s design features a Motorola M6809 processor, a Zilog Z80 sound CPU, and CEM3394 sound chips contributing to its distinct audio presentation. Notably, Toggle remains a prototype arcade game and was never formally released; it represents an intriguing glimpse into early game development from Jon Kinsting, Mark McPhee, and Jesse Osborne.
