Pilot your spacecraft into the depths of space in Konami’s Thunder Cross, released in 1988 as the first entry in its series. This two-player horizontal shooter puts you and a partner against waves of mechanical enemies across a variety of alien landscapes. Using an eight-way joystick, players maneuver their ships to destroy approaching foes while collecting power-ups that enhance firepower and shield strength. The gameplay loop revolves around navigating treacherous environments filled with diverse enemy patterns and challenging boss encounters. Successfully clearing each stage unlocks the next in a quest to eliminate the Mechanikon hordes. A memorable soundtrack accompanies the action; a particularly recognizable theme later inspired an influential musical piece used in early 90s Amiga demo scenes. Thunder Cross was followed by a sequel, Thunder Cross II, in 1991 and has since seen ports to modern consoles including the PlayStation 2 and PlayStation 4. A limited-edition soundtrack album was also released shortly after the game’s initial debut in arcades.
