Thief
Pacific Novelty • 1981

Pacific Novelty’s Thief, released in late 1981, presents a maze chase experience for two players. Gameplay involves navigating a detailed maze while collecting scattered currency, similar to Pac-Man's dot collection mechanic. However, instead of ghosts, four distinctively behaving car enemies patrol the screen, adding complexity to the pursuit. A unique feature allows players to temporarily reverse roles and pursue their opponents by driving over dollar signs located in each corner of the playfield – or elsewhere on later levels. Each stage concludes when all currency is gathered, at which point a "Crime Level" score is awarded. The game’s aesthetic is defined by its unusual visual style, showcasing an ambitious but ultimately unconventional approach to early arcade graphics. Thief cabinets are notable for their bright red exterior, oversized marquee depicting a 1920s paddy wagon, and an internal cassette player that loops recordings of police radio announcements, occasionally punctuated by encouraging or critical commentary triggered by the players’ performance.
