The Pit
Zilec Electronics • 1982

In The Pit, players assume the role of an astronaut-explorer who crash lands and must excavate a path through subterranean tunnels to retrieve treasure and return to their spaceship. Using controls, navigate twisting passages while dodging hazards like falling rocks, acid pits, projectile spikes, and lurking monsters. A steadily depleting tank represents the eroding mountain near your ship; once it’s gone, so is your escape route. The gameplay centers around digging through rock formations to uncover valuable gems and crystals. Successfully collecting these treasures earns points, with bonus scores awarded for gathering specific combinations of gems. Reaching the spaceship requires a perilous crossing of "The Pit," a chamber featuring a retractable floor concealing a monster and corrosive acid—a risky maneuver that yields substantial rewards if completed safely. Originally released in 1982 by Zilec Electronics, The Pit is designed for two players. Distinct versions exist; notably, the Japanese release features altered visuals, gameplay mechanics like disappearing boulders, and a missing hazard from the acid pit.
