Tetris (set 4, Japan, System 16A) (FD1094 317-0093)
Sega • 1988

This 1988 Sega release brings the globally popular puzzle game to arcades in Japan. Two players can compete simultaneously as they manipulate falling blocks—tetrominoes—rotating and positioning them to create complete horizontal lines. Successfully clearing lines prevents the stack from reaching the top of the playfield, extending gameplay. This version, running on Sega’s System 16A hardware, includes a unique feature: upon starting or restarting a game, players will encounter a predetermined sequence of blocks, known as the "Power-on Pattern." The game utilizes an 8-way joystick for control and a single button to rotate the falling pieces. Its arrival in arcades marked a period where Sega collaborated with Taito to adapt existing titles into the Tetris format. Though initially popular in Japan, this version also saw limited distribution through Taito on their H system hardware. This arcade installment is part of a series that would later expand across various platforms, including home consoles like the Sega Mega Drive and PlayStation 2. The "Power-on Pattern" has even been referenced in subsequent Sega Tetris games, appearing during end credits as an Easter egg for dedicated players.
