Terra Force
Nichibutsu • 1987

Terra Force is a two-player vertical and horizontal scrolling shooter released by Nichibutsu in 1987. Players pilot spacecraft through distinct level sections; one part features upward movement, while the other presents a sideways perspective. As they navigate these environments, players encounter enemy formations and obstacles, utilizing an 8-way joystick for control and two buttons to shoot projectiles and deploy bombs. The game's design echoes elements found in Nichibutsu’s earlier title, Mag Max, sharing its shifting perspectives and level structure. Power-ups enhance the player's abilities, including increased firepower with lasers, a speed boost, and a protective force field. The soundtrack for Terra Force was even released on a limited edition album shortly after the game’s debut, showcasing the unique audio capabilities driven by components like a Zilog Z80 processor and YM3812 sound chip. Terra Force is part of a series that began with Moon Cresta and continued with titles such as Dangar - Ufo Robo, demonstrating Nichibutsu’s evolution in the shoot 'em up genre. A port of the game later became available on Sony PlayStation 4 through the Arcade Archives label.
