Gameplay

Terra Cresta is a vertically scrolling shooter released in 1985 by Nichibutsu, tasking players with piloting the 'Wing Galibur' through a landscape of islands and enemy installations. As you ascend, waves of spaceships, ground defenses, dinosaurs, and massive mothercraft ships attack relentlessly. Scattered throughout the levels are numbered silos; destroying these releases ship upgrade components that attach to your craft, increasing its size and firepower – progressing from the basic Alpha model to powerful forms like Beta with doubled power, Gamma with rear-firing capabilities, Delta with a concussive beam, or Epsilon providing a protective shield. A unique mechanic allows players to deploy a 'Formation' button, temporarily splitting their ship into a triangular formation for increased combined firepower and invulnerability—though the main Wing Galibur remains vulnerable. Collecting all four numbered upgrades transforms your ship into an invincible Phoenix for a short duration. The game supports two-player cooperative play as you fight your way through increasingly challenging stages. This version of Terra Cresta utilizes a YM3526 sound chip, enhancing its audio experience compared to earlier releases. Originally debuting in arcades, it later found its way to home consoles like the NES and PlayStation platforms, alongside computer ports for systems such as the Commodore 64 and ZX Spectrum.
