Tempest (rev 3, Revised Hardware)
Atari • 1980

Navigate twisting, three-dimensional tunnels in Tempest, a unique shooter where you pilot a claw-shaped Blaster around the rim of abstract cosmic corridors. Enemies emerge from the depths of each tunnel and relentlessly pursue your ship, requiring precise movements and quick reflexes to destroy them before they reach you. Sixteen distinct geometric shapes define these tunnels, each presenting new challenges as enemy numbers increase and specialized foes introduce hazards like spikes that trail behind them. Players can utilize two powerful "Super Zappers" per level – one eliminating all enemies on screen, the other targeting a single foe at random – to gain an advantage in the increasingly frantic action. A novel “Skill-Step” feature allows experienced players to resume their progress from a previous level, while less seasoned gamers can incrementally improve their skills without replaying earlier stages. Tempest’s vibrant color schemes shift every sixteen levels and unique visual effects accompany gameplay, creating a dazzling spectacle on its vector-graphics monitor. Cooperative play is supported, allowing two players to face the challenges of hyperspace together.
