Tank Battalion
Namco • 1980

In Tank Battalion, two players take control of tanks in a vertical maze shooter released by Namco in 1980. The objective is to systematically eliminate twenty enemy tanks on each level that appear at the top of the screen. These opposing tanks actively attempt to destroy both your tank and your base, represented visually as an eagle icon on the map. Gameplay involves navigating the maze using a four-way joystick and firing with a single button to dispatch the enemy forces. Successfully destroying all twenty tanks completes a level, but the game concludes if either player's base is destroyed or all lives are lost. This simple premise delivers a challenging experience requiring careful maneuvering and accurate targeting. Tank Battalion laid groundwork for later titles in the series and even made a brief appearance in the film Jekyll & Hyde... Together Again. While high scores remain anonymous, its straightforward gameplay and two-player cooperative mode offered a compelling arcade challenge upon its initial release.
