Gameplay

Take to the skies in Tailgunner, a one-player shooter released by Cinematronics in 1979. Assuming the role of a lone pilot, players maneuver their aircraft using a joystick and fire at waves of enemy planes attempting to disrupt your patrol route. The game presents a first-person perspective as you navigate through vector graphics depicting the sky, dodging incoming attacks while targeting adversaries. Tailgunner’s gameplay focuses on precise control and quick reflexes; successfully destroying enemy formations earns points and extends your flight time. Originally developed by Vectorbeam, the company was later acquired by Cinematronics following the game's release. The title also saw a licensed adaptation from Exidy in the form of "Tail Gunner 2" featuring cockpit units, and distribution through Sega for the Japanese market. A glimpse of Tailgunner even appeared on the silver screen, with an arcade unit featured in the 1982 film Tron. Designed by Dan Sunday and Larry Rosenthal, and produced by Tim Skelly, this vector graphics shooter offered a straightforward but engaging aerial combat experience for players seeking a classic arcade challenge.
