SWAT (315-5048)
Coreland / Sega • 1984

In SWAT, published by Sega in 1984, two players work cooperatively to defend against alien incursions. The gameplay revolves around preventing aliens from constructing a tunnel that connects the bottom and top of the screen. Aliens emerge from purple sections at the base of the playfield and build new tunnel segments upwards. Players can destroy blue tunnel sections or strategically push them to obstruct the aliens' progress, but the purple sections cannot be destroyed. Four distinct enemy types complicate matters: Blockers construct tunnels and can produce Expellers; Anngrers are initially invulnerable and chase players when shot; and Sweepers appear once a continuous tunnel is formed, firing at the SWAT agents from both sides of the screen. Smart bombs offer temporary relief by clearing nearby enemies but also impact the player's on-screen representation. Destroying blue sections earns additional bombs to aid in defense. Each round concludes upon eliminating a set number of Blocker aliens, escalating the challenge as alien tunnels progress and new enemy types appear. SWAT runs on Sega’s System 1 hardware and utilizes a four-way joystick for control.
