Super Volleyball (Japan)
V-System Co. • 1989

V-System’s Super Volleyball challenges players to rally and spike their way to victory in this two-player sports arcade game released in 1989. Using an eight-way joystick and buttons, each player controls a volleyball team attempting to score points by successfully hitting the ball over the net and into their opponent's court. Strategic positioning and timing are key to blocking shots and executing powerful serves. The gameplay is straightforward yet engaging, requiring quick reflexes and coordination between players. Super Volleyball was initially released in Japan and later licensed for distribution in the United States by Data East. It marked the first entry in a series that would continue with titles like Super Volley '91 and Power Spikes II. The game’s technical specifications include a Motorola 68000 main CPU alongside a Zilog Z80, accompanied by Yamaha YM2151 and UPD7759 sound chips to deliver audio feedback during gameplay. Ports of the arcade title were later released for various home consoles including the TurboGrafx-16, Sega Genesis, and Sony PlayStation 2.
