Gameplay

In Subs, two players face off in a tense underwater battle using radar to locate their opponent's submerged vessel. This Atari shooter from 1977 features a unique dual-monitor setup where each player views the action from opposite sides of the cabinet, creating a direct and engaging competitive experience. Players use dials to adjust their radar sweeps, searching for the telltale blip that reveals the location of the enemy submarine. The game’s visual presentation is stark – utilizing a limited color palette displayed across a horizontal screen with a resolution of 512 x 224 pixels. The core gameplay revolves around strategic positioning and quick reflexes as you attempt to pinpoint and destroy your adversary's sub before they find yours, making each encounter a test of skill and awareness. Subs was designed by John Ray and Phil Hash, and represents an early example of arcade games incorporating multiple screens for enhanced player interaction. Operators had the option to configure the game with different coin-based play modes, providing flexibility in how it was presented to players.
