Steel Worker
Taito • 1980

Step into the role of chief engineer in Taito’s Steel Worker, a unique puzzle game released in 1980 for two players. The objective is to construct a stable bridge using ten different girder types, carefully selecting each piece with a directional joystick and button confirmation. A worker must then safely traverse this makeshift structure from one side of the construction site to the other; any miscalculations leading to a fall result in a loss of life and a restart at the beginning. Adding an extra layer of challenge is a limited-use reversal function, allowing players to subtly adjust the Steel Worker’s path—but only nine times per stage. Successful girder placements earn points, with bonuses awarded for enabling the worker's safe passage across the entire bridge. A clever blend of spatial reasoning and quick decision-making makes Steel Worker an engaging experience for cooperative play. The game was initially released in Japan and also appeared as a cocktail table version called "T.T Steel Worker." Powered by an Intel 8080 processor and featuring sound from a Texas Instruments SN-76477 chip, Steel Worker offers a distinctive puzzle challenge unlike any other arcade title of its era.
