Star Soldier: Vanishing Earth is a two-player vertical scrolling shooter released by Hudson and Seta in 1998. Players pilot advanced spacecraft through increasingly challenging environments, battling waves of enemy fighters and massive mechanical bosses. The game builds upon the established Star Soldier series, offering fast-paced action and intense aerial combat sequences. Utilizing custom Seta Aleck64 hardware, Vanishing Earth delivers detailed graphics and a dynamic soundtrack employing 16-bit stereo sound with ADPCM compression. As players progress, they must skillfully maneuver their ships to dodge projectiles and manage limited firepower while confronting the unfolding threat to Earth. The game’s structure follows a lineage of previous Star Soldier titles, maintaining core gameplay elements while presenting new visual and audio technologies for the arcade experience. A Nintendo 64 port followed its arcade debut in 1998, bringing this intense shooter to home consoles. Six separate games comprise the series overall, beginning with the original 1986 Famicom release and continuing through later entries on various platforms.
